Kicking It to Mental Health
by Mind in Salford
After completing the Media City Half Marathon on Sunday 15 February, Salford resident and Salford Royal consultant Harriet Lucero is now preparing for an extraordinary challenge to champion mental health awareness.
On 26 April 2026, Harriet will take on the TCS London Marathon wearing a full football kit -shirt, shorts, socks, shin pads and studded boots (astro boots are not permitted) - while carrying a football by hand. She aims to set an official Guinness World Record for the fastest female to run a marathon dressed in a football kit.
Harriet said: “I’ve always believed in the power of community and movement to boost mental health. This challenge is about more than just running — it’s about shining a light on two causes that make a real difference.
“I’m proud to raise money for Mind in Salford, which provides vital mental health support, and to wear the Winton Wanderers kit to support a grassroots football club that brings people together.”
Supporting Mental Health in Salford.”
Mind in Salford provides essential services in the community, including advocacy, welfare rights support, debt advice, counselling, LGBTIA+ support, peer support, and community mental health training.
Paola Fish, Communications and Engagement Coordinator at Mind in Salford, said: “We are truly grateful and impressed by Harriet’s incredible effort and commitment. Many people find that physical activity has a positive impact on both physical and mental health, helping to improve mood, support better sleep, and offer vital social connections. Outdoor exercise, especially in nature or near water, is particularly beneficial.
“Every penny raised helps to fund our work. Last year, 3,143 people in Salford were supported by our services. In 2026, we aim to reach even more.”
