Greenbank Preparatory School New Annual Event

When Silk 106.9 presenter Dave Chipman (aka “Disco Dave”) stepped into his new role as Operations Manager at Greenbank Preparatory School and Day Nursery, no one could have predicted that a lighthearted remark, “Wouldn’t it be fun to do a Christmas-lights switch on?”, would spark something so special. What began as a passing idea quickly became a labour of love when the site and admin team seized the moment… and didn’t look back.

At the beginning of December, families, friends and neighbours gathered for Greenbank’s first-ever Christmas Lights Switch-On, an evening marked by laughter, music from Disco Dave, carol-singing pupils, a surprise visit from Father Christmas, and the simple pleasures of mince pies, mulled wine and glow-sticks. As the crowd counted down together, the school grounds were bathed in a festive glow that can only be described as magical.

Headteacher Mr Malcolm Johnson reflected, “After the excellent outcome of our recent inspection, we felt this was the perfect time to celebrate our community and show what Greenbank is all about.” The fact that this celebration originated from a spontaneous suggestion by Dave, now part of the school team, gives the event an even more personal, community-led feel.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of staff, pupils and parents, the Lights Switch-On is now officially part of Greenbank’s calendar for years to come. With strong inspection results behind us and community spirit shining bright, the school enters the new year with confidence… and a brand-new tradition.
